Moving Insurance: What Happens If My Movers Break Something?

A couch that has been padded and wrapped in preparation for moving

When you hire a moving company, you’re trusting them with everything you own. Understanding what happens if something gets damaged — before moving day — can save you from a frustrating and expensive surprise.

At College Muscle Movers, we take extensive precautions to protect your belongings. Our crews are trained to handle furniture carefully, we pad and wrap everything before it goes on the truck, and we use proper equipment throughout your move. Even so, moving involves inherent risk. Accidents happen, and it’s important to know exactly how damages are handled.

Moving Insurance vs. Valuation Coverage: What’s the Difference?

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they mean very different things — and confusing them can leave you underprotected.

  • Moving Insurance

Moving insurance is a true insurance product that can only be sold by a licensed insurance company, not by your mover. Your existing homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy may already cover belongings during a move, but this varies by policy. It’s worth calling your insurance provider before your move to find out what’s covered.

  • Valuation Coverage

Valuation coverage is what moving companies actually offer. It’s not insurance — it’s a liability agreement that defines how much your mover is financially responsible for if something is lost or damaged. Compensation is calculated based on either the item’s weight or its declared value, depending on the plan you choose.

In Minnesota, all moving companies must provide a basic level of coverage at no extra cost. This pays out $0.60 per pound for a damaged item.

How Moving Insurance Works in Minnesota

Minnesota law requires all licensed moving companies to provide a minimum level of valuation coverage at no charge. This baseline plan pays out $0.60 per pound for any damaged item.

The payout formula is straightforward:

(Weight × Coverage Rate) − Deductible = Payout

For example, if a 100-pound couch is damaged during your move under the free plan:

(100 lbs × $0.60) − $0 = $60 payout

For a couch that cost $800, that $60 won’t go far. That’s why it’s worth considering an upgraded plan before your move date.

College Muscle Movers Valuation Coverage Plans

We offer five coverage tiers beyond the state minimum, designed to fit different budgets and levels of risk. Here’s how they compare using the same 100-pound couch example:

MN Required

Cost: Free
Coverage Rate: $0.60 / lb
Deductible: $0

(100-Pound Couch x $0.60) – $0 Deductible = $60 Payout

Economy Protection

Cost: $15
Coverage Rate: $2 / lb
Deductible: $100

(100-Pound Couch x $2) – $100 Deductible = $100 Payout

Most Popular

Extended Protection

Cost: $30
Coverage Rate: $2 / lb
Deductible: $50

(100-Pound Couch x $2) – $50 Deductible = $150 Payout

Best Value

Premium Protection

Cost: $75
Coverage Rate: $4 / lb
Deductible: $100

(100-Pound Couch x $4) – $100 Deductible = $300 Payout

Elite Protection

Cost: $150
Coverage Rate: $4 / lb
Deductible: $50

(100-Pound Couch x $4) – $50 Deductible = $350 Payout

Replacement Coverage

Replacement coverage depends on the declared value of your items.

Economy Protection is our most popular plan and a solid choice for most moves. Extended Protection offers the best value — a lower deductible than Economy at only $30 more, resulting in a meaningfully higher payout for minor price difference.

If you have high-value items like antiques, artwork, or expensive electronics, Replacement Coverage is worth a close look. Compensation is based on the declared value of your items rather than weight, which is a much more accurate reflection of what things are actually worth.

Which Plan Is Right for You?

A few questions to help you decide:

What does your existing insurance cover? Check your homeowner’s or renter’s policy before your move. If personal property is covered during transit, you may not need to upgrade.

What are you moving? A studio apartment full of budget furniture carries different risk than a four-bedroom home with heirloom pieces and high-end appliances.

What’s your financial cushion? The state minimum plan is free, but a $60 payout on a damaged couch won’t feel like coverage if you’re looking at a $1,000 replacement. Upgrading to Extended Protection for $30 is cheap peace of mind for most people.

Whether you’re moving with College Muscle Movers or comparing options across the Twin Cities, understanding valuation coverage before you book is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself.
